Christy was discovered outside a business and was being fed by the employees. Someone suggested that she looked like she had puppies and they trailed her to discover her two puppies out in the cold. The Rescue took the three of them in and fostered them until the puppies were weaned. The puppies were both adopted, while Christy stayed with GRRNT so that she could be treated for heartworms and be spayed. Happily Christy has now completed heartworm treatment and is ready to find her new home.
When Christy first arrived in her foster home she was very shy and would lean away when approached. She is still very anxious and scared around people, even her foster mom sometimes. However, foster mom has seen her progress a lot since then. Based on her wariness of people, foster mom believes she has always been a stray and has never known what it was like living in a home. Christy is gradually learning to trust, but still startles at any type of noise.
Christy is more comfortable around other dogs, and lives with two small terrier mixes in her foster home. She’s fine with them and often prefers to hang out with them. She doesn’t play with them, but just “checks in” with them regularly. She’s house trained and lets foster mom know when she needs to go outside. She seems to enjoy being in the house more than outside. As soon as she is done with her “business” she comes right back to the door.
When foster mom first got Christy she would turn away if you looked at her. She has gradually become more comfortable and will now meet her look, knows her name, and will come when called. She will take treats out of her hand now. She is not comfortable being petted yet, but we’re working on that. Christy has a spot on the couch that she just loves and is content to sit there all day. Due to her heartworm treatment she has not been able to go on walks, so leash training is just now starting.
It will be easier for her to adjust to a new home if there is another dog in the house. She does like other dogs and gains confidence from being with them. We will not place Christy in a home with children, since she is fearful and runs from the grandchildren that have visited her foster home.
Christy will make a fantastic companion for someone who has the patience to take it slow and work with her. We believe in her past life she had never been around people nor trusted them. Christy is an “easy keeper”, and makes no demands on you. A loving home will help you earn her trust. She just needs some time, and a family with kind hearts and a lot of patience.
