Surrendering

Golden Retriever Rescue of North Texas (GRRNT) accepts Golden Retrievers of all ages and conditions. Typically, we receive Goldens in one of three ways:

  1. from shelters

  2. owner releases

  3. strays

If your dog is a Golden mix or any other breed:

GRRNT’s focus is on pure bred Golden Retrievers. Please find mixed breed rescue groups that can assist with finding homes for Golden mixes or other dogs.

A volunteer will respond to your message as soon as possible to obtain as much information as possible about the dog and determine next steps. This information will be reviewed by our intake coordinators who will make arrangements with the shelter for the care of the dog.

Before you contact us, please consider the following: Golden Retrievers, as well as other animals, are living beings who deserve to be treated with decency and respect. The loss of their home and owner is extremely traumatic to most dogs. Surrendering your Golden to any rescue organization should occur only after all possibilities of keeping the dog in your home have been fully explored. Please consider consulting a trainer before surrendering your dog to determine if any behavioral issues may be remedied. The behavior problems dogs face often stem from a lack of consistent training on the owners’ part.

A volunteer will respond within 24-48 hours to obtain as much information as possible about the dog. The volunteer will transfer your information to one of our intake coordinators who will contact you and make arrangements to come to your home and evaluate your dog. Please keep in mind that a volunteer coming to your home does not guarantee that GRRNT will accept your dog. We cannot accept a mix breed, or a dog which is unadoptable due to aggressive behavior. A lack of foster space can also limit our ability to take in a dog.

Owners looking to surrender a Golden should be aware that our first obligation is to dogs in shelters who face euthanasia. We accept owner releases as space permits and ask owners to help cover the expense for the care of the dog.

If you are a concerned citizen that noticed a stray dog, or a dog in a shelter:

Thank you for keeping an eye out for dogs that are in need. Please fill out the Stray Dog form as it is the fastest way for us to spread information between our volunteers. We also ask that you send pictures of the stray to intake@goldenretrievers.org. If GRRNT is unable to bring the dog into the rescue, we can reach out to other rescues to assist with finding homes for the stray dog.
