Katy was found as a stray and her finders were unable to locate her owner. They attempted to find her a new home, but then realized that Katy was pregnant and reached out to GRRNT for help. Katy delivered 8 puppies on 10/17/18. Once the puppies are weaned Katy will also need to have heartworm treatment. Her puppies will be ready for adoption when they are about 12 weeks old.

PROFILE

Katy is a gentle and sweet young female who came to GRRNT pregnant, and in October she had 8 little trick or treaters we called the Halloween litter. She has weaned her puppies and is ready to start being a puppy herself. Nursing puppies was taxing on her, she is only 51 lbs., and is very thin. She currently gets fed 3 times a day to help put some weight on her. Even with being so thin, she does not beg. She sits quietly and patiently waiting for her food to be served, while her foster siblings bounce around in excitement over meal times. She is taking medication to prepare for her heartworm treatment, and will take it easily if itโ€™s hidden in a bite of cheese. She is a sloppy drinker though, so much so foster mom keeps the water bowl on the tile floor with towels around it.

She does great with her two canine foster siblings, two cocker spaniel boys, but we donโ€™t know how she reacts to cats. She does love kids, and is living with a 13 year old and 16 year old right now. Foster mom feels confident she would be great with younger kids too. Katy loves to play with toys. She will fetch a ball, play tug-a-war and play on her own. She also enjoys playing chase with her human playmates too. She thinks barking at people she sees outside the house through the window is a great past time too.

Katy sleeps on the couch in the living room at night, but she does need to be crated when the family leaves the house. She has done some counter surfing, and got on top of the table as well, so she needs a little bit of house manners training. Basic training is always a good idea with any new dog. Katy does fine on car rides, once she is coaxed into the car.

Katy will have to undergo heartworm treatment, and we expect she will be ready for adoption toward the end of February. Check back for updates on her progress.

UPDATE

11/30/2018

Katy started her pre-heartworm medicine on Nov. 21. She has to take that medicine for one month. Her next vet appointment is Dec. 20, where she will get her first round of heartworm treatment. She will then wait until Jan 22 and will receive her second round of treatment. She will need another 30 days of recovery following the second round of treatment, so she should be ready for adoption toward the end of February if all goes well.
