5/15/2020 - Blake’s surgery to amputate his leg went well, and he is doing very well adjusting. Since he had not been using the leg for some time before coming to GRRNT, it really has not made any change in his happy, sweet personality. The lab report identified the cancer as soft tissue sarcoma, specifically synovial cell sarcoma. The good news is that there is a relatively low risk of it spreading to other organs or areas of the body, which means he won’t need chemotherapy or radiation at this point. The vet does recommend we monitor with regular x-rays and ultrasounds every 3 months for the first year, and then every 6 months thereafter.  The life expectancy for a dog with his diagnosis is 2 years. The research they have on dogs with this diagnosis has shown that at some point in the next 2 years, it does metastasize.  If or when that happens, we'll look at chemotherapy as an option to prolong his life, assuming his quality of life is still good. Unfortunately, Blake also has heartworms and we will need to discuss how to treat that in consideration of his cancer diagnosis.

Blake is entering our permanent foster program. He will remain in the care of a GRRNT foster family, and GRRNT will continue to provide all the medical care he requires for the rest of his life, however long that may be.

5/6/2020 - Blake had surgery today to amputate his rear leg. We are waiting for the lab results to determine what type of cancer it was and what the treatment options are. We will update as soon as we have more information.

Blake was picked up as a stray by animal control. He had been picked up by animal control a couple of other times, the owner did not reclaim him this time.

Blake is heartworm positive, and has an ear infection. He is not using his left rear leg and when the vet xrayed the leg they identified a tumor involving the joint, which they believe is cancer. His xrays will be sent to the oncologist for review and to determine the next steps in treatment. We will update when we have a plan for Blake’s treatment.
