Daisy, or Daisy Doodles as her foster family affectionately calls her, is a true testament to the kind of spirit and energy a senior Golden can have. Not much is known about Daisy’s younger years, but in the few years before GRRNT, Daisy was shuffled between several homes and lived for a while as an outside dog until a loving family took her in and called GRRNT. When Daisy first came to GRRNT she was a happy dog, but not a very healthy dog. She weighed over 100 pounds despite her small frame and lacked the stamina to walk more than just around the block. She was loving from the very beginning, but she needed someone to love her back and help her get healthy.

Over the next several months, Daisy blossomed into a sweet, gentle, affectionate little lady. Daisy shed the excess weight by going on 1-2 mile daily walks, eating low-cal food, and romping around the yard. And when Daisy walks, she does it with style and grace. She has her head up with a big smile on her face and, when the mood strikes, she will break into a trot and run half a block. Never has there been a happier dog than Daisy on a walk.

As Daisy became more and more used to her new home, she emerged from her shell and showed what a spunky little doll she is. She throws herself into the fray with her brothers and sisters when they are vying to see who gets pet first during TV time at night. She has no problem pushing her foster brothers and sister out of the way to get to her people, and has no qualms about pawing her people to let them know that all the attention needs to be on her. When mealtime comes around, Daisy is the first one in the food room, waiting to be served. If her foster mom AKA waitress takes too long for Daisy’s taste, then she will offer a playful growl and bark, which usually lifts her front paws off the ground. Then she transforms into Dyson Daisy, and gobbles up her food before checking all of her brothers’ and sister’s bowls to make sure they didn’t leave a morsel of food behind.

In the last several months she has discovered that she is allowed on the couch, and now, it is her throne! Whenever her people come home, Daisy will undoubtedly be found lounging on the couch. After a long walk, she’s on the couch. After dinner, nap on the couch.

Not only does Daisy have a special personality, there is something else special about her as well: Daisy is completely non-seeing and partially non-hearing. She has well-developed, nearly opaque cataracts in both eyes and only responds to loud or high-pitched noises. But do not worry about Daisy being sad; nobody told her she has these limitations! It took Daisy less than a day to figure out the furniture layout and floor plan of her house, so she doesn’t run into things, and her foster family is very conscientious about keeping her away from the pool. Daisy’s seeing and hearing issues, combined with her age, are why Daisy is a permanent foster. Daisy will live out the rest of her happy days in the loving home of her GRRNT foster family, where she will be cherished like the queen she is.

We are saddened to share the news that our sweet Daisy left us today for Rainbow Bridge. Our deepest thanks to her permanent foster family for providing tender loving care and a wonderful home for Daisy in her last years.

Permanent Foster Parent Update - 06/04/2014:

Just wanted to let you know that Daisy will be having eye surgery on June 12. After extensive testing, the doctor determined that sight cannot be restored in one of her eyes due to the maturity of the cataract, but that she is a good candidate for the surgery in the other eye. So right now she is on a regimen of meds and eye drops to prepare her for the surgery. Fingers crossed that everything goes according to plan!

And don't mind that look on her face. She always gets that look when meal time is over. It's actually quite sad.

Permanent Foster Parent Update - 04/04/2014:

Daisy has been to see the eye specialist and was tested to see if she will be a candidate for cataract surgery. The doctor completed an ERG test and will do another one in 8 weeks. If the ERG reveals additional deterioration, then surgery would probably not result in lasting sight. If the additional test reveals no further deterioration, then the cataract surgery should help her regain her sight. We will keep you updated.
